Kids Eat Free At Many Places For Halloween

I think it's really cool that different restaurants are letting kids eat for free all weekend. Yummy Pumpkin Doughnuts with Apple Cider Glaze

These little beauties would be so great to make for your kids to eat when they get home from trick-or-treating on Halloween! Yet another way to incorporate yummy pumpkin into our diets this time of year. I love it!

PUMPKIN DOUGHNUTS

with Apple Cider Glaze or Cinnamon Sugar

1 egg

1 egg yolk

1 C. canned pumpkin puree

1/2 C. sugar

1/2 C. buttermilk

1/4 C. brown sugar

3 T. butter; melted

4 t. baking powder

2 t. pumpkin pie spice

1 t. salt

1/2 t. baking soda

3 C. sifted all purpose flour

Vegetable oil for frying

1. Whisk egg and yolk together in a large bowl until frothy.

2. Add pumpkin, sugar, buttermilk, brown sugar, and butter; whisk until combined.

3. Stir in baking powder, pie spice, salt and soda.

4. Fold flour in gradually until a sticky dough forms; cover with plastic wrap and freeze 15 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, heat 2" oil to 370 degrees in an electric skillet, deep fryer, or straight-sided pan over medium.

6. Pat out dough on a well-floured surface to 1/2" thick, then cut with a 3" and 1" biscuit cutters dipped in flour. (You can also use a doughnut cutter, if you have one.)

7. Transfer doughnuts and holes to a floured baking sheet using spatula that's been dusted in flour.

8. Fry doughnuts and holes in batches in the oil until browned, about 3 minutes, turning once (holes will cook faster). Drain on a paper towel-lined baking sheet.

9. Finish with sugar or glaze (see recipes below).

10. Makes about 18 doughnuts and holes.

APPLE CIDER GLAZE

1/2 C. apple cider

pinch of salt

5-6 C. powdered sugar

1. Heat cider and salt in a small saucepan over low until hot.

2. Take off the heat and whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth.

3. Dip cooled doughnuts in glaze and let stand about 5 minutes.

(The glaze will dry as it cools, so make it just before using.)

CINNAMON SUGAR

1 C. sugar

2 t. ground cinnamon

1. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small paper bag.

2. Toss doughnuts and holes in sugar mixture while hot.

Print of Candy Coupons For Halloween Clearance!

The day after Halloween is so fun!  All of the stores discount anything that has Halloween images printed on the outside.

Last year, my husband went with me because I wanted to show him the madness.  We got bags and bags of Candy for only $.19 each! 

What you will want to do is print out all of the Halloween Candy Coupons that are left out there.  I would recommend doing it now vs later- in case the coupons disappear from the site.  Just store them away for a few days.  Then, the day after Halloween- head over to any store and you will see the discounts.

November Visiting Teaching Idea/Message

The NovemberVisiting Teaching message is to be selected from talks in our last General Conference. I loved President Monson's talk during the General Relief Society broadcast, and found a fun handout to go with it. President Monson began by sharing the following quote:

A young couple, Lisa and John, moved into a new neighborhood. One morning while they were eating breakfast, Lisa looked out the window and watched her next-door neighbor hanging out her wash.

“That laundry’s not clean!” Lisa exclaimed. “Our neighbor doesn’t know how to get clothes clean!”

John looked on but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, Lisa would make the same comments.

A few weeks later Lisa was surprised to glance out her window and see a nice, clean wash hanging in her neighbor’s yard. She said to her husband, “Look, John—she’s finally learned how to wash correctly! I wonder how she did it.”

John replied, “Well, dear, I have the answer for you. You’ll be interested to know that I got up early this morning and washed our windows!”

President Monson went on to talk about not judging one another - and the meaning of charity.


Just for fun, I thought I'd share a recipe for homemade window cleaner. It is tied to a bottle of vinegar, which is a main ingredient in this simple concoction, and a great food storage item. I printed the recipe on white copy paper, and on colored cardstock, the following quote:

Charity is having patience with someone who has let us down. It is resisting the impulse to become offended easily. It is accepting weaknesses and shortcomings. It is accepting people as they truly are. It is looking beyond physical appearances to attributes that will not dim through time. It is resisting the impulse to categorize others.

I cut the recipe out with some freehand scallops, and rubbed the edges on a dark yellow ink pad for a little depth. I glued that to the front of my folded card. I then punched some flower shapes out of newspaper, stacked four together, and attached them to the card with a black brad. I squished up the petals to give the flower some body. Feel free to let your creative juices flow!

I then punched another hole in the corner of the card and tied it to the vinegar with a pretty ribbon. You can view President Monson's talk here.

Leaving Comments

So I've worried a lot lately that I put all of this time into doing research, taking pictures and posting information on this blog, and nobody is even looking at it. I have heard from a couple people say at church that they have taken a look at it before, but sometimes I wonder if perhaps I'm spending all of this time when nobody reads it?

I took a look at the "comment" settings on the blog, and noticed that to leave a comment, you had to actually have a Google account. I changed the settings, so anyone can leave a comment, regardless of having an account or not. It will just be under "anonymous," so you can leave your name after the comment, or if you wish to remain anonymous, I suppose you don't have to put it.  I just thought I would give you that bit of information, and see if things change at all. This is unlike any calling I've ever had, and I hope I'm putting information on here that is helpful and that you are able to become more self-reliant, prepared, and save some money!
